Jetstar Passenger Refuses a Seat Swap, So Her Neighbor Makes Sure She Regrets It

Refusing a seat swap now comes without consequences. At least, for an Australian woman. When a Jetstar passenger asked her seatmate for a simple swap, the answer was no. What came next reignited the debate about whether it's fine to ask someone to swap seats with you.

Sarah Button had her seat picked out well before boarding, a back-corner business-class spot she'd chosen specifically for the long haul from the United States to Australia. The content creator told Yahoo Lifestyle that she'd barely settled in when she clocked another passenger watching her.

"Oh, you wouldn't mind moving [seats], would you?," the woman asked Sarah. She told Yahoo Lifestyle that the woman asked for the seat swap because she wanted to sit next to her partner.

Sarah, however, declined to move. She told Yahoo Lifestyle that she had recently switched seats on another flight to accommodate a family, and it was an awful experience. Thus, she vowed to never do it again.

She's not one to leave seating to chance. Sarah told the outlet she pre-selects her seat on every flight she takes, a habit built specifically to avoid situations like this one.

As Sarah refused to move, the woman simply replied: "It's going to be a very long flight for you, then," Sarah told Yahoo Lifestyle.

She wasn't bluffing. She followed through on her promise, and made sure the rest of Sarah's flight was as unpleasant as she could make it.

"It was just so rough, and the whole time, she was leaning over to her husband," Sarah said, adding that the passenger was pointing at her and taking photos of her.

Sarah felt uncomfortable, so much so that she asked a Jetstar flight attendant to intervene and get the woman to stop. But that barely made a dent.

The passenger even leant over and started heckling the Aussie when she was taking photos of herself during the flight. Sarah claimed that the passenger also restricted her ability to get up to use the bathroom.

Beyond that, Sarah said, her options were limited. Making a bigger scene risked drawing even more attention her way. So she chose to sit with the discomfort instead. She called the power play "f*****g weird" and chose to be "passive" and just let the woman have her way.

"I was just like, 'there's no way. There's no way this is happening'. I didn't have a script for that," Sarah told Yahoo Lifestyle, adding that she did not prepare for that, especially "[flying] business".

When they were disembarking, Sarah figured an apology was coming, at the very least from the woman's husband. It never came. She posted a video of the incident on TikTok las week, which she captioned: "Lady on the plane kept taking photos of me after I didn't agree to change seats, asked the attendant to ask her to stop and she told him I'm an 'influencer' and that was apparently reasoning enough."

In the comments, one user wrote: "Her lack of planning doesn't make it an emergency for you."

Another user shared a similar story: "A British woman was so mad I wouldn’t switch seats with her on a 1.5 hour flight she proceeded to take pictures of me, then text her friends in Portuguese to call me a dumb American (I’m Canadian) lol."
