Depending on the manufacturer and plane model, hidden sleeping compartments may be available onboard certain aircraft. These rest areas are typically positioned above the rear of economy class or above first class. They are designed to accommodate up to eight crew members for rest during long haul flights.
Tucked away discreetly above the rear section of economy class, there lies a modest sanctuary for the hardworking flight attendants, cleverly disguised as a toilet door at first glance.
Rest Area of Boeing 777-300ER
Did you know that Cathay Pacific has a hidden rest area for their cabin crew on the Boeing 777-300ER? It’s cleverly located above the back section of economy. At first glance, the entrance looks like a regular toilet door, but once opened, it reveals a narrow set of stairs leading to the secret rest area. Inside, you’ll find eight cozy bunks arranged in two rows of four, with a small aisle between them. To ensure privacy, the bunks are separated by a partition wall and curtains. It’s a well-designed space for the hardworking crew to recharge during long flights.

On Etihad’s brand-new Airbus A350-1000, the crew rest area is ingeniously tucked away in the galley towards the back of the plane, elevated above the aisle. Rest Time for a Flight Attendant on Long Haul Flights
The crew must have at least three hours of rest if their flight duty lasts more than 14 hours (from when they start until 15 minutes after the engines are turned off). If the flight duty period is longer than 18 hours, they need 4.5 hours of rest in the bunk.
The crew members rotate to take their well-deserved rest breaks. Once the first meal service is completed, the first group will have their chance to rest. Interestingly, it is quite common for the cabin crew to opt for being part of the second group.
With two meal services already completed, the second group of crew members must be feeling exhausted. It’s no wonder they find it easier to catch some much-needed sleep.
